Burge stands for Farrer

DENILIQUIN farmer Louise Burge is standing as an independent candidate for the seat of Farrer at the August 21st  federal election.

Determined to make Farrer an electorate with a loud voice in Federal politics, Mrs Burge has embarked on her campaign to ‘give Farrer a future’.

“I know fighting to win the seat will be a huge challenge, but it is one I am ready to succeed in,” she said.

“I also know that people from one end of Farrer to the other are totally fed up with the lack of attention we receive, and being used as a political football, and as an independent member, I will change that,” Mrs Burge said.

Mrs Burge has been heavily involved in agricultural associations for many years and is recognised for her in-depth knowledge of agri-political policies and its impact on the region, particularly natural resources.

But Mrs Burge also has a clear understanding of the other major issues affecting the electorate, particularly a lack of health services to regional and remote communities, and the lack of infrastructure funding.

“We need strong regional communities across the entire electorate of Farrer,” she said.

Mrs Burge has stepped down from all of her lobbying roles to take up the fight for Farrer.

She has previously been involved at board and executive level with the NSW Farmers' Association, has had involvement in various capacities with National Farmers' Federation and has served on government advisory bodies.

Mrs Burge said if elected as an Independent she will maintain that independence.

“I will be representing this region and its needs,” she said.

“The major political parties are simply not listening to our concerns. We are being traded off and ignored,” she said.

Mrs Burge said the region's water assets were being traded for political gain in South Australia, and the Murray Valley’s red gum timber industry had been sacrificed for environmental favour.

Mrs Burge said she would take the fight to Canberra to ensure any policy decisions made on national issues, such as climate change, natural resources and international trade relations, which directly affected the regional areas, were properly considered.

“The ramifications of national decisions are really felt in regional and remote areas, and I will make sure this electorate is properly considered when policies are being considered.

“It is essential decision makers know the implications on regional areas of their national policies.”

Mrs Burge said in the past 10 years she had voluntarily served the interests of regional Australia with a range of organisations, during which time she had developed extensive networks, and strong knowledge of the many issues affecting regional Australia.

“These range from natural resource management to infrastructure deficiencies, declining services and centralisation of services to major centres.
